  1. Wildwood Crest - We here in the Crest saw an unusual amount of public drinking during the recent convention. Open containers, plastic cups of beer and apparently nothing was said or done. Is this the price elderly taxpayers must pay to live in a supposedly booze-free resort?

  2. North Cape May - As a mom with a son deployed overseas, I am concerned he may be sent to Africa as part of our nation's anti-Ebola mission there. Shouldn't health professionals, nurses and doctors be going, who are trained to deal with extremely infectious diseases, rather than our boys who may be exposed unknowingly to something as highly contagious as Ebola? Where is the public outcry?

  3. Wildwood - Spouters overwhelmingly supported the New York judge who threw out a case by a child advocacy group, asking that corporal punishment of children be banned. Now, the issue is again before us with the football player who allegedly beat his son severely. 22 other countries have already banned such child abuse, and they are ready to ban it here in America through the United Nations. Let officials know we will not stand for this barbaric discipline, and teachers who suspect it must contact child services.

  4. Court House - Regarding the editor's reply as to why NJ's pension system is broken: In the early 90's, all the major unions "loaned" the Whitman administration our pension money to pay state debt. Unfortunately, our union leaders did not ask for collateral to back these loans. This money was never paid back. Each succeeding administration, for 12 years, declared "pension holidays" so no agencies paid into the system. The only ones paying their share were employees. Gov. Christie should honor his promises to fund our pensions so we can survive during retirement.

  5. Cape May - The Big Ten Conference now has 14 teams, and they've had 11 teams since Penn State joined about 15 years ago. The Big 12 Conference only has 10 teams. Is it me, or should college football conference names bear some relationship to the number of member schools? Maybe they should change their naming schemes to something other than numbers.

  6. Wildwood - I was on the beach off Baker Ave. in Wildwood with my children late in Aug. and noticed a lifeguard totally dedicated to his craft, paying particular attention to the small children and ensuring they were not going out too deep. What struck me about this lifeguard was his age. He was not the typical 22-year-old, rather I would guess that he was in his mid-40's. I was so impressed by his work ethic that I mentioned it to a supervisor in a truck. I wish we had more lifeguards dedicated to their work like this one!

  7. Court House - To the spouter commenting about traffic at Shellbay and Golf Course Rd.: You haven't seen anything until the parkway overpasses are completed. The 'thinkers' and planners greatly underestimated the amount of traffic at this intersection, particularly during the school season.

  8. Middle Township - We should not continue beach replenishment and federal flood insurance out of fear that it would hurt tourism. Not everyone here relies on tourism anyway and many would like a smaller, local population if tourism faded. If people want to live near the beach, pay the higher, private insurance premium. Let the beach towns fund beach replenishment themselves. The beaches will always be there to attract tourists. Let people build at their own risk. If a storm wipes them out, let them rebuild at their own expense.

  9. Wildwood - As a teacher, I am puzzled by Pastor Rudy's recent "let boys be boys" column. His belief that males should be free to let their impulses and instincts control all their actions is precisely why so much currently in the news showcases domestic abuse by sports figures, and it contradicts all we try to teach our young male students, which is the need for respect and kindness to others.

  10. Wildwood Crest - Reading a Herald report about inconvenient road problems in the Crest, borough officials need to acknowledge that a new group of citizens has relocated here, and unlike longtime residents, they demand more open and transparent local government. Times have indeed changed here, and those in authority unwilling to accept, or realize it, must be willing and gracious to move on.
