Looking for a way to stay active? Want to start 2014 off with a physical challenge?
Here’s one that will raise money for a good cause and improve your fitness; The 8th Annual CONTACT Cape-Atlantic Triathlon/Duathlon.
Best of all, you’ll have a whole month – January 20 to February 17 – to complete the event: a 2.4 mile swim…a 112 mile bike ride…and a 26 mile run. The registration donation is $30 and is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center. New this year is that you can start NOW (instead of waiting until Jan.), and complete either the triathlon or duathlon outdoors. You will receive a calendar chart for the official event in Jan., and a blank one to fill in as you take the challenge now. You can do it twice for the one registration fee.
Competitors can substitute gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting (CONTACT will supply the calendar chart) how many laps they swim or aqua size classes they take for the swim leg of the event; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. (An aerobics class, for instance, equates as a 2-mile run).
Everyone who enters receives a t-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center, 1735 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City, on Sat., February 22.
The triathlon/duathlon is a fundraiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a non-profit group and United Way agency that makes daily telephone reassurance calls - - more than 80,000 a year! - - to help its elderly and disabled clients live independently at home.
Registration forms are required and are available at the Ocean City Aquatic Center, by calling CONTACT at 463-4564 or 823-1850, by e-mailing email@example.com or visit our website at www.contactcapeatlantic.org.
